Your logo isn’t just a graphic — it’s the cornerstone of your brand identity. But a single logo isn’t always enough. To build a flexible, cohesive brand that looks polished in every context, you need a set of logo variations designed to work across every application.
When I design custom branding, I deliver a complete logo suite — each version in multiple colorways (full color, black, white) and file formats (EPS, JPG, PNG) so you’re ready for anything.
Here are the three essential logo types every brand needs — plus when and how to use them:
1. Primary Logo — Your Flagship Brand Mark
Your primary logo is the main version you’ll use most often — the one that represents your brand at first glance.
This design should:
Feature your full brand name and, if appropriate, a tagline.
Be balanced and versatile for both digital and print.
Capture your brand’s personality and core message.
This is the logo that will go on your website header, business cards, signage, and anywhere your brand needs its strongest identity.
2. Alternate Logos — Flexible Versions for Every Layout
Not every space is built for your primary logo. That’s where alternate logos come in. These versions might be:
A horizontal layout for website headers or email signatures
A stacked layout for square spaces like social media profiles
Slight variations emphasizing different elements of your brand
Alternate logos give you options that always look intentional and polished — no matter where they appear.
3. Submark — A Secondary Mark for Accents
A submark is a simplified version of your logo used as a brand accent — like a signature stamp.
Think of a submark as a graphic supporting role that elevates your brand without replacing your main logo.
Use your submark for:
Business card reverse sides.
Website footers or watermarks.
Social graphics, stickers, packaging details.
Most submarks are circular stamps or stylish monograms. They’re perfect for subtle brand touches that reinforce recognition.
You only need one submark design, but in most cases I create more than that for my custom branding clients – I just love creating submark designs!
You submark design can be a circular stamp or a monogram. The fun thing about your submark is that it can look completely different from your logo.
Why You Need All Three
Having a complete logo suite makes your brand look:
More professional
More intentional
More consistent — everywhere you show up
Instead of forcing one logo into every possible space, you’ll have a tailored set of marks that always look intentional and beautifully designed.
